Standing seats

Active chairs for working at standing seat workplaces

For an effective work performance and for the well-being at the workplace, according to today's understanding apart from the health aware attitude of the individual, as well as stable social psychological framework conditions, the ergonomic design of the workplace is ideal. Regardless of whether at the office or in the industrial area. For the ergonomic design the change between sitting, standing and movement is regarded as being the goal.

The significance of ergonomic standing seat chairs

Furniture is available that makes "moving sitting“ possible: Due to their special construction supportive active chairs automatically keep the back and the abdominal muscles active - and thereby fit. Although movement has already come to the workplace design by means of sitting corners or standing/sitting combinations, there are pure standing workplaces at which work must be continuously undertaken in the standing position - e.g. counters, laboratory, reception, height adjustable writing tables. So that such working conditions can be endured over the long term without health damage, so-called standing seat chairs are indispensable.

Standing seat chairs are higher than normal chairs, have a relatively small sitting surface that is adjustable in the inclination and can be easily moved at the workplace. They allow a body posture between sitting and standing. With individuals that use the standing seat chairs, up to 60% of the bodyweight is no longer on the legs and feet, but on the standing seat chairs. This relieves the cardiovascular system, joints, tendons and ligaments and allows the dynamic straightening of the spinal column.

Standing seat chairs are not only intended for standing workplaces

The application of standing seat chairs is however not only recommendable for pure standing workplaces, but also for standing seat workplaces at the office. Here the standing seat chair can make an important contribution towards the change between sitting and standing. The standing seat chair should be sufficiently stable, comfortable and ergonomically designed.

The inclination of the central column and the construction of the sitting surface are decisive

Through a slightly forward inclined central column one automatically sits "straight“. The goal hereby is to support the physiological curvature of the spinal column also with a high sitting position, and at the same time increase the stability. The sitting surface should be height adjustable so that your feet can be placed on the floor with full contact, in addition this increases the movement comfort. Furthermore, it should not be too low and be inclined towards you.

Make sure that the front part of the sitting surface can be individually and variably adjusted to the pressure of the thighs, which leads to a pronounced pressure reduction.

The importance of ergonomic standing seat chairs for commercial workplaces

With modern standing seat chairs the three leg principle with stop rollers ensures that they are not only always stable and secure on uneven floors, but at the same time also offer sufficient leg freedom. If in addition the sitting height can be easily adjusted through a foot adjuster, one has the hands free (important function in the laboratory) and the standing seat chair is also quickly accepted by several users.

Checklist

  • The entire seat should be adjustable to the movements of the user and to various standing and sitting positions. Ideal is the inclination angle as well as the adjustment of the sitting height (from 65 to 80 cm) automatically adjusted to the work task, so that the feet can be placed in full contact with the floor.
  • The sitting surface should not be too low (approximately 30 cm) and have a slight forward inclination. This has the goal of also supporting the physiological curvature of the spinal column with high sitting position and at the same time of ensuring the stability. Ensure that the sitting surface is comfortably padded and does not create any pressure points.
  • The standing seat chair should have multi-dimensional dynamic movability. This movability amongst others causes activation of the torso muscles and the large joints, activation of the vein pump, promotion of the mobility of the spinal column, positive influencing of the pressure conditions on the intervertebral discs, as well as activation of the sensorimotor functions (sense of balance).
  • The standing seat chair must not be too heavy. It should be light and comfortable to transport and/or adjust.
  • All operating elements should be intuitive and easy to operate.
  • The standing seat chair must be designed with sufficient stability. I.e. it must not suddenly slip away on different floorings such as concrete, tiles, PVC, carpet or parquet flooring.
  • Finally a few tips that you should observe before buying:
    • Where exactly is the chair to be used: at the laboratory, at the industrial workplace, at the office table. Depending on the application location different factors may be important. Must the chair be easy to clean? Must the chair mechanisms be protected against dust? Must the chair be easily adjustable or easy to transport? All these things may be important and should be considered in advance.
    • Do you frequently change the working height? Then make sure that the height is easy to adjust and the operation is intuitive and easily accessible.
    • If for various reasons you cannot use the hands for the adjustment (e.g. at the laboratory) then consider models that offer alternative adjustment mechanisms, such as for example a foot adjuster.
    • Do you often incline your upper body forward or to the side? Do you require a extended reaching area for your work? Then the chair should have a large mobility. For example a centre column that is mobile in all directions. Then you are flexible and can cover a large reaching area through slight movements of the upper body.
    • Do you often leave the sitting or standing workplace? Then in this case the rollers are a good solution. The chair can then easily be rolled aside or be pulled towards the workplace again.

Minimum requirements

  • Forward inclination
  • Height adjustment
  • Multi-dimensional movability of the seat and thereby flexible adjustment to the intuitive movements of the user
  • Firm stability
  • Comfortable sitting surface that does not cause any pressure points
  • User-friendly operating elements

Also appropriate

  • Hygienic cleaning possible
  • Foot trigger for adjusting seat height (e.g. in laboratories)
