Therapeutic mobility aids (walkers) in hospitals

Mobility aids in hospital use

Patients receiving treatment after a stroke or craniocerebral injury, those suffering from Parkinson's or multiple sclerosis together with patients who have problems with balance or need to relieve the pressure on the upper body, back or knees etc. following surgery, need therapy in hospital. Usually special mobility aids are needed which provide safe support.

Mobility aids also help patients to learn to walk again in cases of restricted gait and unsteady gait in combination with limited torso stability. Furthermore, they are used for standing up from the bed or chair.

Individually adjustable

Ideal mobility aids can be adjusted in height hydraulically or electrically to suit each individual user, with easy height and width adjustment. A special height scale also shows that once a certain support height has been found to be correct, this can be read off the scale accordingly and readjusted again at any time.

Optimised wheels and accessories

The mobility aids have been developed particularly for modern mobility therapy with adjustable forearm supports, wheels optimised specially for therapeutic use and a wide range of nursing related accessories (holders for drainage bags, oxygen supply etc.).

Checklist

  • The device must be capable of relieving and applying dosed strain to the torso and extremities.
  • The arm support must be fully variable in height and width and adjustable to the individual user.
  • It must be possible to adjust the handles to the anatomic needs of the user.
  • The individual height must be adjusted quickly and easily to adapt the device to changing users (patient and therapist), e.g. by electric or manual means with gas-pressure rocker. A large adjustment range increases the possible uses.
  • It must be easy for the therapist to handle the device.
  • Objective and subjective stability when standing and walking are prerequisite for use. The device must be able to take loads of up to at least 150 kg (bodyweight of the user).
  • Adequate leg room must be warranted in the interests of keeping the body balanced.
  • The device must be easy to use. All adjustments must be completed quickly without tools. Aid for standing up from a sitting position by pushing the mobility aid even under low beds and toilet seats.
  • To act as an aid for standing up from a sitting position, it must be possible to push the mobility aid even under low beds and toilet seats.
  • Appropriate accessories include e.g. a one-arm brake, a tray (to carry food and drinks safely), a basket (to carry small items such as a purse), a bracket to hold oxygen cylinders (important for COPD patients), a transport plate (facilitates transfer of users), remote control for the height adjustment (easier for nursing staff) and an infusion stand.
