Special pillows
Pillows with a specific benefit - including for therapeuthic use
The lumbar spine region has long been considered the back’s greatest weakness. However, a complaint related to desk work and mobile devices is increasingly causing problems: Neck pain due to a poor body posture or intensive use. Malpositions caused by a lack of posture awareness and exercise in everyday life and at work can however be the cause as well.
Problems with neck pain
When multiple complaints occur simultaneously, doctors and therapists speak of a syndrome. Cervical syndrome is the technical term for the neck region. Typical symptoms include burning and dragging pain, among other things radiating to the shoulders, head, arms or chest. Left untreated, it threatens to sooner or later lead to what is known as a hunchback in the vernacular. Aside from targeted correction of the body posture, fitness and physiotherapy, a special pillow can help prevent and correct problems.
Cushion with a special effect
Such pillows have numerous applications. In particular, they can be beneficial for sleeping or while resting during the day. After all, people spend about a third of their life in bed. Appropriately designed pillows can provide valuable support during this time. But even when one only lies down briefly, to relax or during therapy, the benefits of a functional pillow are appreciated.
Explanation: When it comes to special pillows with a specific benefit, we distinguish between two different categories. One category is sleep pillows used as an alternative to the classic pillow in bed, the other is relaxation and therapy pillows that can be used while relaxing or by therapists for patient treatment.
What counts?
- Providing individual support for the head in any sleeping position is important in order to combat and counteract tension and bad posture. Adaptation to your needs is therefore essential.
- Many people suffer from tension in the neck and shoulder area as a result of particular conditions. In such situations, a special pillow should also gently relieve the strain on the cervical spine when resting or sleeping, easing this tension and helping to prevent it in the long term. This can be achieved by gently elongating the cervical spine, lightly supporting the thoracic spine, or incorporating supportive side elements on the pillow, for example. The exact solution depends on the shape and design concept of the special pillow in question.
- If you sleep on your side, the pillow must not put pressure on the shoulders under any circumstances. Special moulding is therefore required for physiological alignment of the head and cervical spine. Pleasant warming of the neck and shoulder area is also beneficial for relaxed positioning.
Hygiene is important
For hygienic reasons, make sure the pillow is easy to care for. It should be washable and cleanable if possible. Good breathability and the use of non-toxic materials throughout are a matter of course.
Checklist for pillows, also for therapeutic use
- Above all, special pillows have to comfortably position the head. This applies in particular to pillows for sleeping, both on your back and on your side (only on your back for relaxation and therapy pillows).
- Personal preference is decisive for special pillows. Since we all have different needs, the pillow has to be individually adaptable or available in different versions.
- Hygiene is important for pillows. Make sure that it not only has a removable cover but that the entire pillow is washable and cleanable as well.
- Appropriate positioning, support and relief provided by a pillow with a special shape can often prevent or alleviate pain. Pain can be effectively eliminated in combination with other therapeutic measures such as physiotherapy, back therapy training, etc. Consulting a doctor is advisable in case of long-term pain.
